End-to-End Learning for Negotiation Dialogues” and was done by researchers from Facebook and the Georgia Institute of Technology. As the title implies, the problem being addressed is the creation of AI models for human-like negotation through natural language. To tackle this, the researchers first collected a brand new dataset of 5808 negotations between plain ol’ humans with the data-collection powerhorse Mechanical Turk. Neural translation technology can already do a good job for simple texts, says Andrejs Vasiļjevs, co-founder of technology firm Tilde, which is developing neural translation services between Latvian or Estonian and English. But a good human translator understands the meaning of the source text, as well as its stylistic and lexical characteristics, and can use that knowledge to give a more accurate translation.

His team and another group at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany have independently published similar studies working towards neural translation systems that can handle multiple language combinations. AI is developing a «secret language» and we’re all in big trouble once it sees how we humans have been abusing our robot underlords. Recent research has discovered adversarial “trigger phrases” for some language AI models – short nonsense phrases such as “zoning tapping fiennes” that can reliably trigger the models to spew out racist, harmful or biased content. This research is part of the ongoing effort to understand and control how complex deep learning systems learn from data. Google created the GNMT system to help it automatically improve languages. Rather than translating individual phrases or words, the machine learning system analyses and makes sense of languages by looking at entire sentences. Following several months of testing, researchers behind the AI have seen it be able to blindly translate languages even if it’s never studied one of the languages involved in the translation.

And it seems individual gibberish words don’t necessarily combine to produce coherent compound images (as they would if there were really a secret “language” under the covers). The “secret language” could also just be an example of the “garbage in, garbage out” principle. DALL-E2 is OpenAI’s newest AI system is meant to develop realistic and artistic images from text entered by users.

For example, if the neural network has been taught to translate between English and Japanese, and English and Korean, it can also translate between Japanese and Korean without first going through English. This capability may enable Google to quickly scale the system to translate between a large number of languages. But the researchers also said it is impossible for humans to comprehend the AI language and translate it into English.

A buried line in a new Facebook report about chatbots’ conversations with one another offers a remarkable glimpse at the future of language. It’s worth noting that Daras’ conclusions are still somewhat tenuous. As he notes in the paper, the results aren’t 100 percent consistent. Sometimes, the prompt «Contarra ccetnxniams luryca tanniounons» generates pictures of bugs, while other times it generates images of «mostly animals.» AI models optimizing to use nonsensical communication is not surprising nor impressive, which makes the extremely hyperbolic media coverage of this story downright impressive.

However, since Facebook’s researchers provided no incentive for trading in English, the programs immediately created their own terms for cutting deals. Adding a “language” program to that might see these robots identify humans a lot quicker.
